This Guangzhou, it’s a big place, you know? Lots of folks, lots and lots of folks. They say it’s one of the biggest in China. And China, well, that’s a big country! Biggest port, they call it. My nephew, he works on one of them big boats down there. Says they load and unload all day and all night. Big ships. He brought me back a fancy scarf once, said it came all the way from across the ocean. This place, Guangzhou, been around forever. Like, 2,000 years forever!

They got this thing, this Guangzhou forum, yeah, that’s what I heard. It’s a big meeting, many people come. Big shots, I reckon. They talk and talk. What about? I don’t rightly know. Probably important stuff. Business, you know? This city, always about business. Always been like that. Used to be part of that old Silk Road thing. You know, where they sold silk and spices? Long time ago.

So many people in Guangzhou! More than Beijing, they say. That’s a surprise, ain’t it? Canton Fair, they call it. Every year. People come from all over, buyin’ and sellin’. Big, big deal. My grandbaby, she went once. Said it was crowded! Like a can of sardines, she said. But she saw all sorts of things. Gadgets and gizmos. You name it.

If you ever go, they got all sorts of things to see. This big tall tower, Canton Tower, they call it. You can go up, look at the whole darn city. And that Chen place, Chen Clan Academy or something. Fancy, I heard. Lots of old stuff. If you like old stuff. And shopping! Oh, the shopping! They got this street, Beijing Road, they say it’s the best. Everything you could ever want, probably.

They say Guangzhou is friendly. People there like to meet other people. I heard some folks go to clubs, like for taking pictures, or walking in nature, to find friends who like the same things. That’s smart, ain’t it? You like the same things, you get along. Like me and my friend, May, we both like gossiping!

• See that tall tower, Canton Tower. Good view, I bet.
• Walk down Beijing Road. Buy something pretty.
• That Chen Clan Academy place. For the old folks, maybe.
• Eat some food! They got all kinds of food. I hear they like to try everything.

They also got these flower things. Tianhe Flower Carnival, that’s it. People give ’em as gifts, they say. Pretty, I suppose. And Christmas market, even though they don’t celebrate Christmas like we do. It’s the thought that counts, I reckon. And lots of other things, I reckon. Markets and whatnot. It is a big city, this Guangzhou. They say it’s always busy. Always something going on. That Guangzhou forum, you know.

This city, Guangzhou, it’s always changing. New buildings going up all the time. But some things stay the same. Like that port. Always busy. Always boats coming and going. And people. Always people. Coming and going. Looking for something. A good deal, maybe. Or maybe just a good time.

I heard they got these events, you know, where people meet up. Share their interests and all that. Could be anything, they say. If you’re going to that Guangzhou forum, you might meet lots of people who like the same things you do. It is a good way to find friends when you are in a new place. But I’m happy right here. Got my friends, got my family. Don’t need to go to no Guangzhou. But it sounds like a place, don’t it? A real place.
